General information

Uranus is considered a generational planet because it stays in a sign for approximately seven years and returns to the same sign approximately every 84 years. It is the first of the new planets and was discovered on March 13, 1781 in the constellation of Gemini by Astronomer William Herschel. In actuality, the first recorded sighting of Uranus occurred in 1690 by John Flamsteed. However, most people thought that it was another star. Even Herschel thought that Uranus was a comet when initially discovered because astronomers at that time were convinced that Saturn was the last planet orbiting the Sun.

On May 27, 2010, Uranus enters Aries and starts a new cycle. It will be in Aries from May 27, 2010 to August 13, 2010 when it retrogrades back into Pisces. It will re-enter Aries from March 11, 2011 to May 15, 2018. Its final stay in Aries during this cycle will be from November 6, 2018 to March 6, 2019. This is an important event astrologically because Uranus signifies changes which occur in the world, usually brought about by an entire generation of individuals born within a specific time frame.

The energy surrounding Uranus has always been erratic. Either change occurs because the old system is no longer working. Or, change occurs because the environment is not in harmony with the human soul. It is interesting that there are astronomical, historical, and mythological foundations that symbolize the erratic nature of Uranus.

While Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, is the third largest in diameter, it is actually smaller in mass than Neptune. Uranus also has an unusual spin. The south pole of the planet points almost directly at the Sun. With other planets in the solar system, the equatorial regions point towards the Sun.

When Uranus was discovered, Herschel wanted to name the planet Georgium Sidus in honor of King George II of England. Other people called it Herschel. Yet, Johann Elert Bode recommended that the planet be called Uranus in keeping with the other planets which were also named after gods and goddesses. The name Uranus didn’t become common until 1850.

Uranus was considered the sky god in both Phoenician and Greek mythology. As the sky god, Uranus was married to Ge, the Earth, in Phoenician mythology and Gaea, the Earth, in Greek mythology.

The Greek mythology is important because both Gaea and Uranus were considered major deities just prior to the gods of Mount Olympus. Gaea initially gave birth to Uranus and married him to create the first race of men, the Titans. They also gave birth to the Cyclopes and three monsters called the Hecatonsheires or the Centimanes. Uranus was horrified by his children, especially the Hecatonsheires, and buried them in the earth. Gaea wanted revenge by cutting off Uranus’s genitals and one of her children, Cronus (Saturn) carried out the plan, throwing the genitals into the sea. The blood gave birth to the Furies and the white foam which floated on the surface gave birth to the goddess Aphrodite.

However, Cronus also had his fears: An oracle predicted that his child would take over his reign. With the help of Uranus and Gaea, a child by the name of Zeus was taken away and raised in the forests of Ida. When Zeus became an adult, he cast Cronus aside and the reign of the Olympian gods began. (1)

The mythology surrounding Uranus and Cronus is important because it shows that the son emulated his father in many ways, especially in fear of a new generation. Each one tried to protect his realm. Each one failed. Change needed to occur in order for a new order to begin.

In astrology, the planet Uranus co-rules the sign of Aquarius with Saturn (Cronus). It represents the need for a generation to move beyond the confines of current authority and establish its own line of authority. In the absolute negative, Uranus can represent the dictator who believes only his or her course of action is the right one. Wherever you have Uranus in your chart, you need to look at life from the perspective that your understanding may actually be better than what authority perceives you need to understand. As seen in the mythology of both Uranus and Cronus, there is an underlying fear of children gaining power over authority. Yet, whether by action based on revenge, or action based on love, life will change and others will eventually take over as rulers.

With Uranus now entering Aries, it’s important to understand a bit about the energy of Aries. Aries is a cardinal, fire sign. As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries represents the need to rush into life and experience everything first personally If you have a lot of Aries planets in your chart, you don’t want to be told what to do. You want to be like its symbol, the Ram, and charge through life. So, when Uranus is in Aries, tremendous changes occur. The only difference is that these changes occur as a reaction to past events because in mundane astrology, life is a continuum of energy.

Economics

The previous time that Uranus was in Aries, between 1927 and 1933, was during the time of the stock market bubble in 1927 in the United States as well as the Great Depression. It was also the time period that Adolph Hitler gained power in Germany. Excitement ruled this generation of people. Initially, with the Roaring 20s there was a sense of immortality and youth. But as the world moved into economic chaos, the biggest psychological concept that ruled this generation was the fear of banks collapsing and money disappearing. Life was a harsh experience which needed to be controlled through security and safety.

When Uranus was in Aries between 1843 and 1851, people were rushing to California to find gold and England was trying to expand its empire into India and New Zealand. Conditions were shocking for the workers as Charles Dickens and Sinclair Lewis wrote short stories and books publicizing their plight. Dorothea Dix revealed the shocking conditions found in prisons and asylums. Many Irish immigrated to the United States as a result of the potato crop failure. This generation focused on trying to improve their personal condition while also trying to expand their borders.

Between 1759 and 1768, England continued to expand its borders. However, American colonists were balking under the constraints felt from British rule. American colonists were banned from printing their own money and the Stamp Act was passed by Britain in order to tax the colonists. Potato became the most important food crop in Europe. This generation focused on finding ways to gain freedom from what they considered to be oppression.

Economically, Uranus in Aries represents extremes. After Germany’s hyperinflation in the year 1924, it appeared that the economy was moving back into prosperity. By 1926, it appeared that Germany recovered from hyperinflation. However, stock prices were very low and foreign investment high which led to a bull market. On May 12, 1927, Berlin banks issued a statement announcing that they were curtailing lending against securities. Black Friday occurred the next day. Some historians indicate that the event created the onset of the depression in Germany. (2)

Black Tuesday in the United States occurred on October 29, 1929 when the stock market crashed, although some historians give it an earlier date in October. The Federal Reserve did try to decrease the stock bubble in 1928 by raising interest rates to individuals who borrowed money for stock speculation. However, this did little to curb the speculation. When the crash occurred, the stock market lost more than 10 percent of its value. Once this depression occurred in the United States, it spread quickly through the entire world, especially Britain and Germany. The Great Depression, which economist initially thought would last only a few years ended up lasting close to ten years. Many individuals blamed the Federal Reserve System for not acting sooner to prevent speculation. Yet, many economists believed that the market would correct itself. (3)

Financial systems were linked together during the previous time period that Uranus was in Aries. It is believed by some historians that Germany’s onset of depression came as a result government’s panic that increased foreign investment was leading to decrease national power. Meanwhile, historians now believe that expecting the market in the United States to correct itself after Black Tuesday in the United States is what led to worldwide economic turmoil and the Great Depression.

Weak links in financial systems are revealed when Uranus is in Aries. Although you know that financial systems between nations are linked, you really don’t understand just how important those links are. When one system starts failing, others follow. The next eight years are going to be a balancing act between various financial institutions and government agencies behind those institutions. New laws and regulations will be put into place. Look for changes in the Federal Reserve Board in the United States and the Financial Services Authority in Britain. Both will be given more authority to oversee and inspect banks. Both will be given more authority to intervene when there’s a potential for bankruptcy with banks.

While some government officials in the United States keep raising the concern that they no longer want financial institutions “too large to fail,” the current world economic order may actually lead to increasing the size of all banks. Currently there are two main systems of banking: The branch model where banks are large and assets are concentrated; and, the unit model, where many banks exist and assets are found throughout the banks. Most European countries use the branch model while the United States uses the unit model. Canada’s banking system is considered a hybrid and, according to The World Economic Forum, one of the soundest in the world. (4)

The pendulum swings in wild directions when Uranus is in Aries. As a result, government officials tend to react to these swings with regulations. Perhaps the best way to understand this is what was said at the World Economic Forum (Davos). According to a Washington Post editorial, dated January 31, 2010, David Ignatius wrote “They (the forum members) take it as a given that the free market failed in the crash of 2008 and that the new system will be more regulated, more interventionist, more prudential than was the old.”

Clinical research

Health is an important area to watch when Uranus is in Aries. One of the major areas will involve vitamins while another major area will involve hydrocarbons.

Between 1927 and 1934, the focus was on the body’s ability to take care of itself. Vitamins were discovered and isolated: Vitamin A, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin D. In addition to the discovery of vitamins, the male hormone androsterone, and the female hormone, estrone, were discovered.

Androsterone is an androgen hormone, such as testosterone. These hormones are responsible for the sex characteristics of boys that appear at puberty. While testosterone is a true hormone, androsterone is actually a metabolized form of this steroid and is excreted in the urine.

Estrone is an estrogen hormone, such as estradiol. When girls enter puberty, this hormone enables girls to develop their sex characteristics. These hormones also serve two other functions for women. They are part of the ovarian and estrus cycles and are utilized in the development of oral contraceptives. They also are important in the development of mammary glands during pregnancy.

When Viagra was discovered for men, it was not intended as a pill which improved sexual desire in men. Rather, it was developed for other uses and the side effect, increased sexual desire in men, changed the marketing and sales of the “little blue pill.” Since its discovery, pharmaceutical companies have sought a similar pill for women. Attempts at using Viagra have met with little to no success in women. However, that may change when Uranus is in Aries. On November 16, 2009, the 12th Congress of European Society for Sexual Medicine met in Lyon, France. Developers Boehringer Ingelheim announced a new pill for women, Flibanserin, as a possible female “little blue pill.” Like Viagra, this pill was initially developed for another purpose: Help with depression. Women taking the pill reported a side effect: Increased sexual desire. However, unlike Viagra which can be taken when needed, Flibanserin must be taken daily for weeks in order to experience any results.

What is important to note is that cholesterol, a steroid hormone, is important in the synthesis of other steroid hormones such as progestogens, estrogens, and androgens. Cholesterol is something which all humans synthesize in their bodies so while eating a low- to free- cholesterol diet may help individuals lower their cholesterol, it doesn’t stop the production of cholesterol in the body.

During the time period that Uranus is in Aries, research will continue to focus on steroid hormones in the hopes of helping women who want to get pregnant naturally. It will also continue to study ways for individuals to increase their sexual enjoyment. And, the study of hormones, especially the steroid hormones, will become important as scientists try to discover the “fountain of youth.”

Cholesterol and steroid hormones are either hydrocarbons or their derivatives. Another hydrocarbon is terpenes and terpenoids. Many of the medicinal and cosmetic essential oils are either terpenes or terpenoids. In an effort to increase holistic approaches to health, scientists will conduct more research on the value of medicinal essential oils. This will also be true for organic pesticides since camphor, a terpenoid, is used as a moth repellant.

Vitamins are an area of research, especially the use of Vitamin A in cancer prevention, and the use of Vitamin D in treatment for cancer as well as bone loss prevention. In 1967, Anthony Norman, one of the world’s leading experts on Vitamin D was able to convert vitamin D to Hormone D, a steroid hormone. Since that time, more research has been done on Hormone D and its various medicinal possibilities.

Throughout the time period that Uranus is in Aries, more research with be conducted not only on cancer treatment but also prevention. Some major breakthroughs will occur, especially in the areas of prostrate cancer and leukemia.

Aries: Now is the time to experience new opportunities in life. While you’ll want to rush into things, try and take time to assess the possible risks before taking action.

Taurus: Your old value systems seem to be dissolving and you’re not quite sure what to replace them with. Things which were important to you no longer hold their value. Take time to clean out the clutter and learn more about your spiritual needs.

Gemini: People have always been important to you and now your friends and social groups are even more important. You’re open to new ideas as you meet and attract new people into your life.

Cancer: Family may have been the most important thing in your life, but now you find yourself looking outward and trying to find a place in the world. It’s important to learn what status means to you and how you want to leave your mark on the world.

Leo: You feel inspired to learn more about spiritual matters and even teach others about the lessons you’ve learned. As you discover new aspects of life and spirit, remember to take time in expressing these new concepts.

Virgo: You may want to help others, but it’s also important to understand their agendas and not let them manipulate you. You’ll become more interested in studying the mysteries of life.

Libra: Relationships, especially legal commitment relationships, are under going changes. During any negotiations, don’t lose your ethical viewpoints.

Scorpio: You’re used to having stability and routine in your life. Now that routine is being upset. Focus on what makes you feel good and pay attention to your health.
